Any of various four-winged insects of the order Trichoptera, which are found in almost every type of freshwater habitat. Eggs that are deposited in or near water hatch into the worm like larva which, after growth is complete, enters a pupal stage from which the winged adult emerges. Caddis fly adults bear a superficial resemblance to moths but lack the moth's coiled sucking tube for feeding. These insects have long thin antennae. When not in flight the wings remain folded in a tent like manner along the body.
